There are basically two types of website available...

  1. 1. "Template" sites that can be bought very cheaply, but will look like many other sites that use the same template.
  2. 2. "Custom" websites, designed from scratch specifically for your business, to give your business a unique web presence.

The first is very cheap, and for many small businesses that is a very tempting way to put their business online.

The second costs more, but will be unique and make your business stand out from the crowd.

Which should you choose for your business?

While websites generally give an address on its Contact Page - have you ever thought about giving your website visitors and potential customers accurate, printable driving directions right to the door of your business premises?

While your site visitors can find your address on your Contact page it would be nice if they could also get a printable route directly from their own location, wherever that is in the UK, right to the door of your business. This facility can make the difference between getting a sale, or the visitor moving on to one of your competitors that does offer this facility.

You have to remember that during the daytime a lot of the visitors to your website are using work place machines during their tea/lunch breaks. As such they are in an enormous hurry. They want information and they want it FAST!

Since moving our hosting operations from Holland to the UK in mid-March we have embarked on a constant drive to upgrade and improve our systems and our services.

The last round of upgrades, which announced 10 major improvements for clients, was announced in our "New Cloud Hosting Platform" blog post on the 5th April.

We have today just finished another round of improvements for clients which involved a major revamp of our Client Area and our customer invoices.

The new Client Area is now far more user friendly, fully responsive and makes paying invoices easier than ever.

The changes to the Client Area include:

Countryside Discovery

Whether you’re looking for a family holiday in the countryside, a rural weekend escape, or an out-of-season break in beautiful surroundings, Countryside Discovery parks are the perfect places to discover the countryside in peace and tranquility.

Escape to one of 14 different locations throughout England, Scotland and Wales; from rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, mountain views, forest clearings, meadowlands or sat nestled in a valley, our parks have something to offer everyone.

Countryside Discovery parks are inspected to ensure that they offer the peace and tranquility you deserve. The park will be small, less than 150 pitches, away from busy roads and towns, and without the disturbance of noisy entertainment or discos. Countryside Discovery parks can be found throughout England, Scotland and Wales so wherever you’re planning to go, there’ll be a Countryside Discovery park waiting to greet you.

At some point, any business owner is going to need to think about getting a website for their business - or about having their old website updated...

At this point a business owner might be tempted to go the "DIY" route after seeing so many adverts for Website Builders that can "build your website in minutes" and tell you "no experience necessary"...

Is this a good idea for you or your company?

Answer 1:
Possibly - if your budget is so tight you can only spare a few pounds to create a website that will represent your company and/or brand all over the globe - then yes, go for it. Just don't expect the site to be unique, as many other businesses will also be using the identical template that you chose when creating your DIY website at one of the online website builders, where you choose a template then add your own text etc.

Things have changed dramatically on the internet in the last few years - when you walk down any street you see people glued to their mobile phone screens - in any bar, cafe or restaurant you see people glued to their tablets. What are they doing? they are using the internet, and these mobile devices now account for over 60% of all searches on Google!

Surprised?

You shouldn't be - gone are the days when a website owner had a "captive" audience who were all tied to their PC's either in their offices or at home. And even better for us in those days, they were all using similar resolution monitors, so designing a page to show well to everyone was a lot easier than it is today as there were only 2 different resolutions to worry about: 800x600 and 1024x768.

Joylina.com

Joylina.com was set up in the year 2000 offering healing and readings, and as an information resource on all things spiritual. Over the years, as Joylina has learnt and grown, it has expanded as she continues to share her knowledge and wisdom.

Whether you are interested in learning about angels, healing, spiritual and psychic development or are just curious, browse away. Perhaps you just have questions such as “what is the difference between a psychic and a clairvoyant” or a spirit guide and an angel, or even “how could they help you”? Perhaps you want to know about your “Life’s Purpose” or are interested in having a reading?

Well you have come to the right place.

Joylina believes we are spiritual beings who have chosen to have a physical incarnation as a human being and that our souls’ live on long after this physical body dies. Part of our purpose is to live rich and fulfilling lives now not someday in the future.

Merch Megan

Merch Megan Crafts is a new and exciting company whose aim is to present more products to you promoting all things Welsh.

Merch Megan offer a variety of new goods as well as continuing to provide the old favourites, and with the help of Merch Megan herself, bring a taste of her language and culture into Welsh homes.

This is the second multi-language site we have created recently - the other being Trebinshun House (in 10 languages).

Our brief for this site was that first and foremost it had to bilingual - offering both Welsh and English on all pages and on all shop products.

Today we published a new CMS website for Richard and Helen Offor of Mid Wales Trees in Nantglas, Powys, Wales.

Their old static html website, written in 2007, was not mobile friendly, so we tackled it and they now have a brand new CMS (Content Management System) website.

Our brief for this conversion from the old static, html only website, to a modern responsive CMS website, was to make the new site "mobile and tablet friendly".

Richard also travelled to West Wales yesterday in order to spend several hours with me here at the CMS Wales office learning about the Administration System of the new website so he would be able to tackle future edits, updates and additions to the site himself.

When was the last time you added new content to your website? If the answer is "ages ago" then your website is "stale" and visitor statistics are most likely dropping.

All too often we see a business have a lovely new website designed and built, only to then see them leave it to stagnate, with no updates after the day it goes live.

Visitors will not return to your website if the content is never updated. In addition, Google now penalises websites that are no longer "active", making those sites a lot more difficult to find in the search results.

This is really bad for business!

There are many ways to keep your website from becoming stale, and keep it up to date and relevant, and gain better results in Google and Bing. Most importantly your website must be updated regularly.

Situated in Llangorse Lake Valley and surrounded by some of the best walking country in the UK, Tall John's House is ideal for a romantic break.

Tall John’s House has been shaped by British naval history. The famous Admiral Hamilton used his substantial prize money to create a wonderful Georgian manor house in the late 19th century.

In the 1950s another admiral, Watson, bought the house and it is still in the Watson family’s possession. It now has all the comforts of the 21st century but has kept its character from the past six hundred years.

Tall John's Weddings knows every bride is different, every couple is unique and your wedding day should reflect that.

To help you create the wedding day of your dreams you have the chance to make the barn your own - your friends, your family, your style.

Website: The Owls Builth Wells

The Owls Bed and Breakfast offers guest accommodation and bed and breakfast in the centre of the town of Builth Wells. Ian and Jo offer vegetarian breakfast with an eye on healthy eating but also have locally sourced sausage and bacon for the traditionalists.

The Owls is situated in glorious countryside in Mid-Wales, close to The Brecon Beacons and Border Counties. Two rooms are pet friendly.

Builth Wells, formerly a Spa Town, is now known nationally as the home of the Royal Welsh Showground. The Owls is situated just a short walk from the Showground entrance. With the Elan Valley, Brecon Beacons and The River Wye all close by, The Owls is the perfect location to discover Mid Wales and all it has to offer.

Our brief for this new website design was that it had to allow the owners to manage the website themselves. It also needed be fully "responsive" (mobile friendly) and very easy to navigate.

At 7am this morning we launched a brand new multilingual website for our client Trebinshun House. The website is presented in 10 languages including: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian, Polish, Russian and Japanese. The website features automatic language switching, so visitors from outside the UK are automatically presented with the website in their own language (provided it is one of the 10 languages installed, else it defaults to English).

Why go Global?

Presenting your company products and services via a multilingual website demonstrates you are thinking about your customers. The bit of extra effort involved on your part (and on the part of your website designer) shows visitors that your company has thought and cared enough about them to offer them your content in their own language. As with all things business, if the customer thinks your company cares about them, then they will be more likely to want to do business with you.

With the growing number of people buying online from all over the world, there really is massive potential to attract them to your business by presenting your website content in their native languages.

You have probably seen lots of adverts on TV lately, telling you that creating your own website is quick, easy and cheap. The adverts tell you that you can create a "professional" website in easy steps - choose a template, add your content and publish your site...

So why, if it is so "easy", is this new trend for DIY websites not putting professional web designers, with their years of experience, out of business?

Any professional web designer worth their salt has years of experience in creating easy to navigate websites with attractive layouts and colour schemes. He or she will also spend a lot of their free time time keeping up with new technologies and learning new skills because the internet is constantly developing. They will have intimate knowledge of the web servers they work on, and the software those servers use.
